The $10 Million Shock: Why We Started the Surgical Instruments Academy

I’ll never forget the day this happened. I was sitting in the office of a major player in global healthcare distribution, a massive corporation with over 45,000 employees worldwide.
I was chatting with the person who had just been assigned as our main point of contact. Naturally, I wanted to get a feel for his background, so I asked him a simple question: "How long have you been in the surgical instrument sourcing business?"
His answer? "I just moved to this department this month."
Okay, fair enough. We all have to start somewhere. But our field is incredibly technical. It’s full of compliance nuances, material grades, and intricate manufacturing limits and opportunities that aren't exactly common knowledge. So, I asked the logical next question: "What kind of training did the company provide to get you up to speed?"
To my absolute shock, he looked at me and said, "None."
I sat there trying to process that. A global healthcare giant had just handed a 10 million dollar annual account to someone with zero training in the specific, complex world of surgical instrumentation.

Bridging the Knowledge Gap
Right then and there, a lightbulb went off. I realized that if a massive corporation wasn't training their team, there must be hundreds of sourcing managers and distributors out there who are completely on their own, trying to navigate manufacturers of surgical instruments, dental instruments, and procedure packs.
That is the exact moment I decided we needed to do something about it. I wanted Dr. Frigz to be more than just a manufacturer, I wanted us to be a resource.
What You Will Learn in the Academy
This field basically requires you to understand the specific lingo and nomenclature used by doctors, nurses, and practitioners. That is a massive amount of medical terms, names, and distinct uses for more than 20,000 different types of instruments. Frankly, it took me 18 years to learn all of that, and I am still learning every single day.
So, here is my two cents to make your job a lot easier. We designed the Surgical Instruments Academy 101 series to give you (Mr. Instruments & Kitting Sourcing Director of Fortune 500 company) the exact foundation you need.
When you dive into these blogs, you will learn:
The absolute basics: What these instruments actually are and how they function in a clinical setting.
The metallurgy: Why instruments are made from different types of stainless steel and how to choose the right one.
The troubleshooting: Why rust occurs, how to prevent it, and how to spot manufacturing quality issues early.
The categories: What the different names and classifications of instruments mean, and exactly how they differ from each other.
