It was early in my journey into the surgical instrument business when I got word that a major buyer from the U.S. was in Pakistan, staying at the Hilton in Lahore—about a three-hour drive from Sialkot. He was on the lookout for surgical instruments, and I knew this could be a game-changing opportunity. With a mix of excitement and nerves, I managed to get in touch with him. He asked me to bring 12 pieces of needle holders capable of holding a suture no. 6. At that time, I was still very new to the business and didn’t even know what a suture was. But I didn’t let that stop me. Determined to deliver, I reached out to a respected veteran in our city’s surgical instrument community for advice. He directed me to a local pharmacy, telling me to get a "needle no. 6." Without fully understanding, I followed his instructions. When I received the needle, it was thick and rigid. I took it back to our workshop, and we adjusted all the needle holders to grip that needle securely without slipping. I felt confident and ready. ​ On the day of the appointment, my brother-in-law and a technician accompanied me to Lahore. As we entered the hotel lobby, we saw the customer, the owner of a well-known U.S. company, evaluating instruments from other companies. He was testing their needle holders against a fine, delicate thread. My heart sank as I quickly realized that this thread was the actual suture. We had prepared our needle holders to hold a thick needle, not a suture. ​ Panic set in, but then we noticed we still had a little time before it was our turn. In a split-second decision, we decided to fix our instruments right there, in the hotel lobby, before being called. Fortunately, we had brought some basic tools with us. We found a spot on the floor of the Hilton and began reworking the needle holders by hand, adjusting each one meticulously to hold the suture thread. ​ After what felt like an eternity, we finished the repairs and stepped forward to meet the customer. With a mix of hope and nerves, we handed over our needle holders. One by one, he tested them—and to our relief, they all passed. Impressed, the customer decided to visit our workshop in the following days, and soon after, he gave us our first order. That moment marked the beginning of a partnership that has lasted 44 years. We’re still proud to work with the same company that took a chance on us back then. ​ That experience taught me invaluable lessons about perseverance, resourcefulness, and the determination to never give up—values that have become the foundation of our business ever since.
